TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information, by Erik Davis

Review

“TechGnosis is an essential work, tracing the co-evolution of technology with the urge for transcendence. It helps put today's obsession with the singularity and post-human consciousness into perspective, without condemning them as mere symptoms of millenarian fantasy nor worshipping at the altar of the eschaton.”—Douglas Rushkoff, author of Present Shock   “Erik Davis has written one of the best media studies books ever published. There’s never been a more lucid analysis of the goofy, muddled, superstition-riddled human mind, struggling to come to terms with high technology. Unlike most tomes about tech, the occult, and social theory, TechGnosis is literate, accessible, and funny. A real winner all around!”—Bruce Sterling, author of Gothic High-Tech and The Epic Struggle of the Internet of Things“TechGnosis is stimulating and original, learned and readable. Erik Davis offers a wide-ranging and consistently thought-provoking guide to the hidden circuitry of the technological unconscious. Invaluable.”—Geoff Dyer, author of Yoga for People Who Can’t Be Bothered to Do It   “Erik Davis’s compendious recitation of the history of communications technology dominates the discursive landscape of techno-exegesis like a Martian war machine. In the grand style of H. G. Wells, TechGnosis is an apocalyptic synopsis of technological climax.”—Terence McKenna, author of The Archaic Revival   “TechGnosis is a dazzling, sweeping look at the metaphysical urges underlying our technological progress. From exploring the Singularity to positioning man as the “spiritual cyborg,” Erik Davis reveals our technological subconscious and writes with a flair that crackles the mind. I love this book.”—Jason Silva, Emmy-nominated host of National Geographic channel's BrainGames and creator of Shots of Awe   “Before The Matrix, there was TechGnosis—the classic and still-pioneering text on the historical and creative interfaces between the technological, the magical, and the mystical.”—Jeffrey J. Kripal, author of Mutants and Mystics: Science Fiction, Superhero Comics, and the Paranormal   “TechGnosis is a tour de force of scholarship, insight, and juicy writing. Like McLuhan, Erik Davis sheds light on the shadows—the places we’ve neglected to look, or have feared to look, in our search for the meaning of human invention.”—Howard Rheingold, author of The Virtual Community: Homesteading on the Electronic Frontier   “TechGnosis is a delirious and exhilarating exploration of the metascapes of new mind and new nature. Pungent and profound, the writing is pure alchemy, and the reader is redesigned in the very act of reading. This is perhaps the best book written on where we are going and how we got there.”—Jean Houston, author of A Mythic Life   “TechGnosis is a masterpiece of informed polemic, welding seemingly disparate blocks of knowledge and thought into a coherent, challenging whole with passion, erudition and wit.”—The Independent“Religion constitutes the perfect content provider (it's already virtual) and techgnosis makes the perfect religion for a world where Capital is god. But before you sign up to download your consciousness, better read Erik Davis.” —Hakim Bey, author of T.A.Z.   “Davis takes on subjects that would appear to be ridiculous in the hands of a lesser writer and renders them appropriately sublime.” —R. U. Sirius, cofounder and editor of Mondo 2000    “TechGnosis is at once an EEG of our silicon unconscious and a recovered memory of sacred technologies. Erudite but wired to the eyeballs, Davis is that rare blend: a postmodern classicist, equally at home with ancient automata and alien autopsies. A true believer in the politics of myth, he’s mindful, nonetheless, of the social issues that haunt our techno-eschatologies. Erik Davis is the perfect tour guide to our Disneyland of the Gods.” —Mark Dery, editor of Flame Wars and author of Escape Velocity and I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts   “I guess you could say Erik Davis is a secret agent of informational change, but make sure you have your mirror shades on, 'cause the information is crisp and thoughtful, sharp as a monomolecular razor, and basically just straight up ridiculously well researched—all while being accessible and fun to read. Not since Jeremy Campbells's groundbreaking Grammatical Man have we had as diverse and engaging a book on the linkages of information and culture, and how the two shape and mold each other. Davis's book cuts through the jargon and empty rhetoric of electro-theory and goes beyond all the clichés of a culture of total amnesia. A new Rosetta Stone for the Digerati.” —Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky    “Davis performs alchemy, fusing disparate strands of techno-hype, mystical speculation, and hard-nosed reporting into a Philosopher's Stone, unlocking secrets our culture doesn't even know it has. Like Greil Marcus, Davis is readable when the thinking gets heavy and in touch with pop culture without being overwhelmed by trivia. TechGnosis is written smart, and far more rare, written well.” —Peter Lunenfeld, professor at UCLA Design | Media Arts, author of The Secret War Between Downloading and Uploading

From the Inside Flap

Exploring the mystical impulses behind our obsession with information technology, TechGnosis presents a fascinating and passionately original perspective on technoculture. Today we often assume that the triumph of technological rationality has condemned the spiritual imagination to the trash heap of history. But as Erik Davis explains, religious impulses and magical dreams permeate the history of technology. Ranging from the printing press to the telegraph, from radio to the Internet, David peels away the utilitarian shell of technology to reveal the mystical and millennialist fervor that attends each new communications breakthrough. As he unveils the hidden history of techno-mysticism, Davis shows how the religious imagination continues to feed the utopian dreams, apocalyptic visions, and alien obsessions that populate today's technological unconscious. In these pages, Davis offers a lucid, playful, and astonishingly erudite journey through our hyper-mediated environment. Anyone grappling with the morphing boundaries and terminal speed of our present moment will want to take the ride.

A brilliant, heady tour through the sacred, the profane, and the downright kooky as Erik Davis illuminates the various mythological, occult, religious and scientific ideas that thoroughly saturate our apparently rational and scientific technologies. This book is reasonably accessible to the layman, and fun to read for anyone with an interested in the intersections of the magic, reality and mind.

I was not expecting a classical Gnostic text when I picked this book up, perhaps that's why I'm not as dissapointed as others who have read it. I was looking for a work in the Gnostic tradition (not Tradition). Davis makes some compelling connections between the old and new seekers after Truth. References cited in this book were also good, and steered me toward other interesting works.

Although Erik Davis's verbiage is densely packed with a surfeit of alteration, he nevertheless captures the spirit and history of the times. It was a book that was valuable enough to me that I purchased both the hardcover when it was first published and the Kindle version.

great

Erik Davis channels the spirit gestalt of the counterculture cyberculture that manifested as Xerox zines in the 1990's and now permeates the digital noosphere as the very surface of the interwebs.Nobody does it better.

Amazing analysis and insight into our past, present and possible future(s).

Cool

Great Read!! Loved it!!

I have written and erased this review multiple times; not because I disliked anything about the book, but because I loved it so much, words are escaping me.Elizabeth Hunter takes beloved characters from her other books and gives them their own novella, opening the door to the lives of Tom and Josie, a couple who shouldn't be a couple but are some of the most interesting characters she's written about. I loved learning the background of how they met, married, and fell in love. An arranged marriage in 19th century Dublin turns into an epic love story that spans decades--how could it not be intriguing? Tom is the perfect tough guy romantic, and Josie is the whimsical Gothic writer (is that some sort of oxymoron?) who happens to have a death sentence hanging over her head. They complement each other's lives in a way neither one realizes they need.A Very Proper Monster and Night of the Waking City are quick reads, yet Ms. Hunter's ability to fit so much into so few pages is something that always astounds me. I always feel like I've read a full-length novel when I've finished her novellas, because she so eloquently packs so much pertinent detail into them to make the storyline clear and understandable. While it's not necessary to have read the Elemental World series to follow along with A Very Proper Monster, it helps with some of the characters in Night of the Waking City.I look forward to the next adventure!

And Elizabeth Hunter does it again, she's written two excellent short stories to entertain our reading addiction. The first story "A Very Proper Monster", is about how Tom met Josie. The second story "A Night In The Waking City", is about Tom and Josie 's trip to New York City. Both stories are written beautifully and flow so well.I enjoyed getting to meet Tom and Josie and how they met, since they have both been mentioned in previous books. It gives secondary characters, like them, more depth when you get given a back story to read. Then to top it off, we were given a second short story of an event on a trip to New York in the present day. Now, since they were in New York and it's written in the present day, who do you know lives there? If you said Ben and Tenzin, you would be correct. Not saying anything else, otherwise it would ruin the story for everyone who hasn't read it yet. I'll just say you won't be disappointed. If you have a couple hours free and you want a quick, but satisfying read, pick this one up. If you've read her other Elemental World books, then this is a must read.

This book contains two stories: a novella and a short story. If you have already purchased Beneath A Waning Moon then you already have the novella. However, if you are a fan of Elizabeth Hunter's Elemental Universe I would recommend that you buy this book just for the short story. I did. That is me. It it was so worth it. Tom and Josie are unique, quirky, and loving. If you are unfamiliar with Elizabeth Hunters work, I wouldn't start with this book. These are short form stories so a familiarity with the world they live in is somewhat assumed. If you are familiar with the Elemental World, and somehow you missed the novella when it was published in Beneath a Waning Moon, then please do yourself a favor and buy the book. The stories are fun, sweet , and poignant.

Tom and Josie are not written as the strongest or smartest or most beautiful vampires in the Elementals universe but their love for each other is perhaps the most romantic of all, as the weaknesses they believe they have are what the other most adores. Because of that love and the loyalty they have for each other, they are some of the most powerful vampires in their world as some of the most powerful and strongest and beautiful vampires call them family and will do anything to protect them. I now rank these two as my second most favorite couple, the first always being Tenzin and Ben. Best of all, Ben gets sage, no-nonsense advice from Tom about his future. Highly recommend!

A wonderful addition to the Elemental series. A good blend if characters we already know and characters that are new to us. It is always gratifying when an author attends to the needs of tangential characters and expands our universe in the telling. This offering is another step in revealing to us the maturing of Ben and his relationship with Tenzin. Can't wait to catch up with and be part of the next stage of Ben and Tenzin. It will also be fun to hear from Josie and Tom when we are in Dublin with Murphy and Bridgette's families.

Josephine and Thomas -- what a pair! A novella from the Elemental World, this one focuses on the older "brother" of Murphy (a powerful vampire in Dublin, Ireland). To help his brother, Thomas marries consumptive (and soon to die) Josephine -- a secluded bluestocking -- in the late 1800's. What an entertaining experience to read through the development of their relationship. Big sigh for such a charming story with just a touch of suspense. Once again, I am enamored with Elizabeth Hunter's settings, plot and characters. The writing is pitch perfect always.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not a fan of the Bram Stoker variety of vampire, but the time spanning avatar is delightful. I read several of the Saint Germain series by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro when I was much younger, which is what introduced me to the concept. You handle a multitude of disparate characters with skill, keeping the personalities distinctive. The locations are varied, but I might suggest using a bit more detail unique to the area. You hit on it here and there, but the scenes can be fleshed out to further delight your readers. If you do a story line in Imperial Russia, please work something in with the Amber Room from Peter the Great's era. It was scavenged during WWII, but there is enough historical material, as well as a reconstructed version to give you some literary grist.BTW, if you really want to try hang gliding, better do it soon. You really can see thermals once you get some altitude, and you'll discover a whole new set of senses up there that are nearly impossible to describe. It's not a sport to take up in your senior years.

You will NOT have access to the website needed to listen to the examples. I nearly failed a class because this didn't come with the proper study resources included in the physical copy.

Apparently the world’s largest empire of the time contributed nothing to medieval music or renaissance music. Neither Spain, it’s music or it’s impact on Latin American music or Medieval Latin American music are ever mentioned. We don’t need a wall when we have intellectual disparagement of a whole culture and language that spans the globe.

No matter what the customer service representatives tell you (and they told me the same thing twice), THIS BOOK DOES NOT COME WITH THE ACCESS CODE, which you must have in order to use it in a college class. The access code will set you back another $100 +/-. Consider buying a used copy or Amazon Book Rental, to offset the code cost.So that this review isn't completely negative: the book is very useful for propping open a door on a beautiful day, or on a cold winter's night to ignite your fireplace.

If you need to use this book for a college music class that requires the access code to listen to the music online, you're screwed. This book is way over priced to not even get what you need to complete your college course. Not getting this access code when I waited to receive the book forever has now put me behind in the class. Now I am having to go through the return process and still going to my college campus bookstore and buying this book again to actually get what I need. This was not noted in the description about the book and was definitely a rip off. DO NOT BUY!

Not only is it overpriced, I didn't get what I expected. The whole point of college students buying this was for the access code and they didnt even specify if it was included or not. Thanks for letting me waste my money.

Excellent textbook to accompany my music appreciation class last semester. The book is structured in an easy-to-follow format that begins by teaching the elements of music, giving the student a good basis of knowledge to learn about the musical periods.

It's a good history on music, concise, but provides a lot of good info. If you're taking MUSI 1306 please get this book instead of the overpriced one, unless your prof specifically asks for that (mine didn't) this will save you 100 dollars seriously and you can find all the music on the cover and back of the book. From there look up the music on Youtube people, this is some old music. They're available online. Save you moolah!

This third brief edition of the bestselling MUSIC: AN APPRECIATION introduces students to the elements of music and then surveys western art music from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Jazz, Rock, Musical theater, and nonwestern music are also covered. New to This Edition A new Annotated Instructor's Edition with suggestions for activities and projects, references to recordings, connections between works, ideas for integrating multimedia and videos. New Vocal Music Guides combine the text of the music with marginal notes to point out the relationship between word, music, and story and are included for chant, oratorio, opera, lieder, and the Broadway musical. A greater range of music is discussed with broader, more current coverage of jazz, computer music, rock, music by women composers, and music by African American composers in the classical tradition. Four new sections discuss music and musicians in society from the Baroque period through the Twentieth Century. Greater coverage of Jazz, including new selections from Bessie Smith, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. More world music coverage including a new section on Classical Music Bingen (O Successores), Monteverdi (Orfeo), R. Schumann (Carnaval), Reich (Sextet), Harvey (Ritual Melodies), Bessie Smith (Lost Your Head Blues), Charlie Parker (Bloomdito), Davis (Miles Runs the Voodoo Down), and Rodgers and Hammerstein (Oklahoma!) New recording package for which Kamien himself selected the best available recording for each selection
