The traveler's gate trilogy being my second experience with Will Wight's work, I find that I could point you to my review of "Unsouled" and say pretty much that.To paraphrase that review, however, I'd say that it contained an intriguing world with legitimately fascinating history and mechanics. The characters were legitimately sympathetic and does a good job subverting your expectations by lampshading a number of tropes and then turning them on their head. However, I would also say the story moves along at a frankly breakneck speed and more time could be devoted to moments of quiet that could be used to expand more on the characters and their relationships. These same praises and complaints can be leveled at Traveler's Gate, possibly to an even greater degree. The biggest problem with this series is it's complete. With Unsouled, you can make the argument that the author will build more on the characters in the later books in the series. With Traveler's Gate, you can see exactly where the characters go and how they got there. The problem is it's not nearly as impactful as it could be.Don't mistake me, it's a good book and I had a lot of fun reading it. It simply doesn't live up to the vast amount of potential its world and characters could have had. Certain characters die, others are... changed, but none of it has as much emotional impact as it could have had.If more time had been spent building the characters and making us care about them, their wants, fears, etc. It could have been an 5 star must read. Instead it's simply a very good 4 star book that should be added to any fantasy fan's back log.

I've been looking for this book for a while. It's very rare to find an author that gets magic and martial arts together right. The last one I've read was Brent Week's Night Angel Trilogy, and the first chapter of the Traveler's Gate trilogy reminds me much of the Way of Shadows. However, a just because the first chapter reminds me of an awesome series doesn't mean it will carry through.Fortunately, I was not disappointed. Although the book doesn't quite punch at the epic levels of the Night Angel, it's close enough. There was also a great insight at the end that I've found useful.Like Night Angel, the Traveler's Gate isn't exactly a heroic or anti-heroic book. I'm glad it doesn't stop at simplistic morals. The author also clearly expresses the limits of virtues, which makes that ending battle even more epic, as it is rooted in real wisdom.I'm looking forward to reading more work from the author.

Awesome trilogy. My honest to god favorite book series. There is an upcoming book at some point in the same series and a short story not in the books that is awesome. I can not recommend this book series enough. The first book starts slow but personally even rereading it I say it's rough slow. It is a great build up just get through it. Its worth the read when taken in conjunction with the rest of the trilogy in one book but I don't know if I would have read it as it came out one book at a time. Simon is an awesome protagonist the pacing of the series is well timed. The universe is fleshed out amazingly in the series. The short stories included add wonderful depth to the story. I recommend this 10/10 I also recommend will wight 10/10

To be honest I would be willing to pay $10 for each book. The quality of his work is that equal to or greater than some well-known authors. Reading the Cradle series prior to this showed me that this author knows how to World build and create magic systems within his fantasy's that are entertaining and have a realistic feel to them. In The Traveler's Trilogy they are advantages and consequences within each of the territories that represent the magical systems within his story. There is plenty of action, adventure, challenges and tragedy as well as some humorous moments that sneak up on you sometimes.there is a bit of a learning curve within the first book but it's fairly easy and straightforward so as not to overwhelm the reader. The trilogy is solid all the way through what's a good foundation middle and end. Do not expect a romantic subplot to be within the series but there are multiple points of views from protagonist and some antagonist at times. Mostly though they are two main point of view characters with others given significant time depending upon which book you're reading. It does not feel like head hopping and reads fairly smoothly most of the time. There is some pacing issues in the third book but it is understandable given the nature of the story. This fantasy can be read by young teens and above. There is quite a bit of violence emotional moments that may not be suitable for younger readers. It is funny how well the author can manipulate the reader's emotions to make them care about extremely silly aspects and take them 100% serious.there is a set of short stories at the end of the trilogy that takes place for the most part before the trilogy safer one story that takes place between books 4 and 5.
