The quality and organization of the book is good; however, there is a serious issue on the Kindle version. In blue-green colored examples where are supposed to be italicized, such as book titles, fonts are not actually italicized; instead, they are typed in a slightly different non-italicized font, which is confusing. These errors are all over in the book. I suppose that perhaps something went wrong during the e-book conversion, but I wonder why this issue has not been fixed by now even after the several years of Kindle publication. This is the book that is supposed to show the "correct" style, including italics in examples. I hope the publisher will correct these errors and run an updated version automatically on my Kindle soon.

A little more than seventy-five years ago, Kate L. Turabian drafted a lot ofguidelines to help students understand how to write, cite, and formally submit researchwriting. The Manual retains three-part structure, leading off with an overview of the stepsin the research and writing process, including formulating questions, reading critically,building arguments, and revising drafts. Part II provides an overview of citation practiceswith detailed data on the two main scholarly citation styles (notes-bibliography andauthor-date), an array of source types with contemporary examples, and detailedguidance on citing online resources. The final section treats all issues of editorial style,with advice on punctuation, capitalization, spelling, abbreviations, table formatting, andthe use of quotations.Everything in this book is very positive and insightful for those writing orexecuting a research. I liked the way the book is divided, it makes our job easier for us toadopt and apply its orientation to our work. Although I believe it is easy to follow aguideline such as this, I do not intent to say that it is an easy work, it requires a lot ofattention and workIt will get my work more organized.

I teach writing and begin with MLA, but I learned Chicago when I first began writing academic papers a million years ago. I have all the manuals for Chicago, MLA, and APA. This is the only one I am actually reading. It offers a great deal of useful advice to students.I might even read it cover to cover.

I bought this book because I was supposed to use it for a class. At the same time, I don't feel like it provided me with any useful tips about how to be a better writer. The problem I had with the book is that it was too impersonal. It would have been better to have a more informal book that would tell you more directly the kinds of things you can do to improve thesis writing The book also contains ridiculous numbers of examples for how to cite sources. At the end of the day, I couldn't even easily figure out how to cite anything.

If you're a history student like myself, this will become your Bible from your first research paper until your dissertation. Seriously, you will be using this thing a lot. The main reason why students buy this book (besides course requirements) is to use it for the citation guide for notes-bibliography format which can get confusing. As a bonus, the manual includes tips and tricks on how to write an effective paper, though some sections can be a little sparse. The weakest part of the book is its section on writing style which is, sadly, lacking.Overall, this book is great to have on hand and is clearly aimed at students. It's written in a clear, easy-to-read manner that makes it accessible to anyone who cares enough to buy a style guide. I would suggest dog-earing the pages on sample citations if you want to figure out quickly how to write a citation without going through the full sections on each aspect of the citation.

I upgraded to the 8th edition after my 7th edition was completely worn out- too much use. The 8th is more concise and easy to use as well as includes more citation information for electronic sources, etc.

Bought the Kindle version last night after tearing my room apart looking for my hard copy and finally accepting it was gone forever. I was a little hesitant to buy the kindle version but I need it for things that are due today and tomorrow.I suggest using this on the computer app over phone/Kindle. Its a bit easier to navigate and if you are typing a paper its already on the screen for you!A con I immediately noticed is something most Kindle books have: spacing/formatting issues. Paragraphs get a little wonky (visually) with Kindle. While this isn't an issue for books you are simply reading, it is a problem for books like these style manuals where we rely on spacing rules and formatting. Basically the biggest reason you are a student using a Turabian book is to cite your sources correctly. If you are unfamiliar with indentions, hanging paragraphs, etc. in bibliography/footnotes etc. then I suggest the hardcopy.If you are using this to make sure you use a comma and not a period when writing a footnote or the correct way to cite a legal document or something, this is perfectly fine. Especially on such short notice.A lot of people assume you can google Turabian just as well but I've found most sites are not consistent, use an old edition of Turabian, or only have basic citation examples like Books, Magazines, Two authors. In order to get the most accurate and complete citation information the book/kindle is the way to go. Graduate level or upper level undergrads would probably do ok with the Kindle version. Those who are a bit rusty or are Freshman/Sophomore should buy the hard copy

Provides all needed information to write Chicago Style citations. I have always used MLA format since I was an English major. However, my husband is entering grad school as a History major and they require Chicago style. This book makes it very easy to correctly cite and annotate papers in the required style. Yes, there are websites that would help, but having a go-to book that gives you advise on every possible situation you may encounter is invaluable. If you're going to be writing papers and using Chicago Style, get this book.

I highly recommend this book for high school, college and university students. It provides clear, step-by-step instructions on how to research and write research papers. Before I found this book I struggled with writing research papers and received B's for my effort, after I bought this book and followed the easy to read instructions, I achieved A+ on all my research papers and ultimately my classes. I recommend this books especially for high school students because learning the right way to write research papers and the whole process of research writing takes time to master and should be learned while in high school so that when you enter college or university you know how to write the many papers you will be asked to write. Each page of this book is packed with good advice and need to know information that, if you read carefully and follow exactly, will help you achieve the grades you want. More than that, there are tons of tips and tricks that make the process of writing research papers more interesting, easy and enjoyable. I have used this book and the A+ grades I received on my papers are a testament to the great instructions and advice that guide you every step of the way in this remarkable book.

This book was extremely helpful and well laid out. Being a person who struggles to complete college level papers, I went from receiving 70% grades to receiving 90%s or A's. When needing to reference material or research questions, the book made it very easy to find the material or answers needed. I would definitely recommend this for any college student or even high school ages student.

Lester, Jr."Corinthian Colleges Inc. is the for-profit college that has been the subject of state district attorney investigations in numerous states, paying $6.5 million in California and agreeing to forgive student debt but admitting no wrongdoing.Comparing this book to the Lester book from 1993 (from my library, all I have to go by), the table of contents appears similar; 40 more pages in 2010 probably about Internet searching. Are the books comparable--how much was taken from the original Lester book, and what was replaced? I hope for the sake of the trusting Corinthian students that the contents are reliable.Some of the examples may be self-serving. The section on searching the database of the Library Congress refers to legislation concerning student loans.I am writing a nonacademic paper and money is tight, so this version will suffice. You get extra credit for critical reading skills with this one.

Do not buy this book used. It requires a code for online use if you purchase it for education use. The code can be purchased without the book and is far better.

A good book on the technical aspects of writing research papers. I found parts of it a little challenging for beginning students, but overall it can be a helpful resource.

Lester's "Writing Research Papers" is still the standard reference tool for university students and high school students who have to write research papers. It also provides an excellent rubric for developing and organizing any type of essay, not just research papers. I first encountered this book as an undergraduate in it's fourth edition. I had previously used Coyle and similar books as required resources. Comparatively, Lester wins hand down because it is concise with good examples. Many editions later, in the world of electronic communications, Lester is still relevant as it has been updated to provide an accepted standard for citing electronic reference and Web sources. I have had to purchase three additional copies since my first, one for each of my sons. In fact I really need to get the most recent edition for my own use since my youngest will taking his copy with him when he heads off to college. This is a must have reference tool for any serious student and a good resource for the professional.

My sister needed this book for a writing class she was taking. The book helped her format a research paper and made her class a little bit easier.
