The Gospel of John (Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture)

From the Back Cover

"This extraordinary book is a result of the rich renewal in biblical studies that has taken place in the last twenty-five years. Increasingly scholars see the importance of putting historical analysis of the scriptural texts in dialogue with theology, spirituality, and the dogmatic tradition. Francis Martin and William Wright have produced just such a reading of the Gospel of John. Their commentary is textured, smart, accessible, and spiritually alert. I would recommend it to novices and scholars alike."--Robert Barron, rector/president, Mundelein Seminary"Commentaries on John are beyond counting. But amid the many books devoted to this great Gospel, this volume stands out for its easy accessibility, academic thoroughness, and enthusiastic support of the Roman Catholic tradition, its liturgical calendar, and its teachings. Abundant fascinating sidebars draw the reader back in time to both the biblical world and the great voices of the Catholic Church. An ideal commentary for lay leaders, teachers, and priests in the Catholic tradition."--Gary M. Burge, professor of New Testament, Wheaton College and Graduate SchoolPraise for the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture"The Word of God is the source of Christian life, and the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture is an ideal tool for living our faith more deeply. This extraordinary resource feeds both the mind and the heart and should be on the shelf of every committed Catholic believer. I highly recommend it."--Charles J. Chaput, OFM Cap, Archbishop of Philadelphia"When the Scripture is read in the liturgy, it is heard as a living voice. But when expounded in a commentary, it is too often read as a document from the past. This fine series unites the ancient and the contemporary by offering insight into the biblical text--verse by verse--as well as spiritual application to the lives of Christians today."--Robert Louis Wilken, University of VirginiaFor more information on the series, visit www.CatholicScriptureCommentary.com

I have learned so much from this book and as a novice it talked to me. Putting the gospel into historical real-time people and their lives fills out the picture.Read this on Amazon Kindle fabulous with all my hightlights/notes. Can't imagine what a paper copy would look like by now!My next one is Revalations, can't wait to see what revelations I learn!Thank you for this series, most readings are over my head or not enough "meat", this is perfect, expands my mind, but doesn't take me to a place like I am reading a foreign language.

First time I've read a commentary from this series. I'm really impressed with the writing. It is very useful for an ongoing study group I'm in. We're doing the Gospel and Epistles of John, and then Revelations. I'm going to be trying out more of this series as time goes on. I highly recommend this as a good Catholic commentary faithful to the teachings of the Church.

I was very pleased with this book. I thought the Gospel was broken into manageable pieces and discussed both thoroughly and thoughtfully. I am Catholic and have recently wanted to learn more about my faith. This book was a perfect fit for someone with that type of goal or interest.

This book was perhaps a little longer than it needed to be, as there was a bit of filler here and there. But, it was certainly not a waste of money. The analysis is solid and enlightening, and the writing is done in a very easy-to-read style. Sections are also nice and short, so a single section — covering a section of Gospel text — can be read in under 10 minutes.

This Commentary on the Gospel of John is a tremendous resource. I enjoy studying the Scriptures using this resource.

John's Gospel is a beautiful spiritual resource to those who can penetrate its profound Hellenistic symbolic and philosophic language. Fr. Francis Martin is the elder master spiritual and hermeneutical scholar of the Bible who can lead us with due reverence through this masterpiece without falling into the many pitfalls that poor theological foundations of our inquiry might present. I highly recommend this invaluable source.

I have been teaching the new testament for about 40 years. This is the most comprehensive commentary I have ever seen. The format is perfect since the Bible passage is commented on after each verse. I have one on my Kindle and bought the book for a Religious Education Coordinator friend of mine who resists getting a home computer even though she uses one a work. She loves this book too.

I find the commentary excellent and easy to use. It will be another important resource for my homilies on the Gospel of John.

The Iron Cage: The Story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood, by Rashid Khalidi

Review

At heart a historical essay, an effort to decide why the Palestinians . . . have failed to achieve an independent state.—Steven Erlanger, New York Times"A first-rate and up-to-date historical and political analysis of the Palestinian predicament."—Publishers Weekly's 100 Best Books issue"In a refreshing contrast to the yammering bazaar of complaint and allegation that has dominated American public discussion of the Middle East since Sept. 11, 2001, The Iron Cage is a patient and eloquent work, ranging over the whole of modern Palestinian history from World War I to the death of Yasser Arafat. Reorienting the Palestinian narrative around the attitudes and tactics of the Palestinians themselves, Khalidi lends a remarkable illumination to a story so wearily familiar it is often hard to believe anything new can be found within."—Jonathan Shainin, Salon"Khalidi uses history to provide a clear-eyed view of the region and assess the prospects for peace. He strives successfully for even-handedness."—Anthony Lewis, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Gideon's Trumpet and Make No Law"A work of forceful historical analysis written in a spirit of self-examination."—Bashir Abu-Manneh, The Nation"Magisterial in scope, meticulous in its attention to detail, and decidedly dispassionate in its analysis, The Iron Cage is destined to be a benchmark of its genre." —Joel Schalit, Tikkun"Khalidi, tackling 'historical amnesia,' brilliantly analyses the structural handicap which hobbled the Palestinians throughout 30 years of British rule . . . Khalidi restores the Palestinians to something more than victims, acknowledging that for all their disadvantages, they have played their role and can (and must) still do so to determine their own fate." —Ian Black, Guardian

Rashid Khalidi may be the foremost historian of the Palestinian people in the United States today. Compared to other major academic historians of the Arab world, my experience with Khalidi's work has always been an approachable jargon-free style that presents the Palestinian cause in reasoned, persuasive analysis. The best example of that is his book The Iron Cage. Here, Khalidi analyzes the history of the Palestinian national liberation struggle, from the Mandatory period to the foundation of the Jewish state, the Cold War and the time since the Oslo Accords. The US media has done Professor Khalidi a great disservice by its focus on his suppoosed militant past and a possible association with candidate Obama that would tarnish the future president's image. He is a sensible, authoritative scholar of the highest order. Anyone wanting to start familiarizing themselves with the history of the Palestinian cause would do well to read this first.

the subject is a difficult one to write about and takes someone who has been involved from the inside to write so accurately on this topic. Khaladi does an amazing job all the way round.

A very good book that highlights the failed choices and decisions on the part of Palestinian leaders and civilians within this conflict. In my opinion, Khalidi’s goal as a historian is to reestablish the agency of Palestinians. In highlighting and assuming responsibility of failings in leadership, the outcome could potentially be the empowerment of their movement as whole.

The truth, plainly stated. Very insightful and reliable documentary, by the most articulate Palestinian voice available to Americans. Khalidi has done the world a huge favor.

Worth reading from the perspective of oppressed people in occupied territory, but skewed from that perspective.

Content Summary: Rashid Khalidi's account provides some valuable historical context for the Palestinian struggle for Independence from the 1920s to the Revolt of 1936 to 1939. This is where is book is at its strongest (Chapter 1-4). He offers some summary analysis and very general overview of the years after the 1948 war - including some on Arafat and the Oslo accords.Analytical Review: Khalidi's book is strongest in Chapter 1-4, as mentioned. I was disappointed that he glossed over the very critical years of Arafat, the PLO, the intifada, Hamas, and terrorist attacks on Israel (be it the Olympics or the suicide bomber attacks). He lost a lot of narrative events he could have developed critically. Additionally, his opening remarks about U.S. support of Al-Qaeda and OBL seem very off-the-mark, almost implying that we directly funded both. It is one thing to say we were both supporting the war against the Soviets, another to supply concrete evidence of a link - which he implies but for which he furnishes no evidence. This made me somewhat wary of his objectivity and accuracy. After that he recovered somewhat, and his conclusion that peace is very difficult right now, is an observation most would share. I would say this book is worth the investment - but more reading is necessary to fill in the obvious gaps he leaves in the Palestinian account.

Khalidi's book is probably one of the most spotted on reading lists dealing with Israel-Palestine: well-written, concise, and essential. Khalidi has a strong historical background in the subject and is able to synthesize events and ideas seamlessly. He is also fluent in a number of languages, allowing him to draw from a wide array of primary and secondary sources. Although Khalidi's political ideology is too liberal for some tastes (and a Wikipedia search away), the book is remarkably unbiased in highlighting the transgressions of the West, Israel, and the Palestinians themselves in thwarting the push for Palestinian statehood. I found his chapter on the PLO and Arafat particularly interesting. Fair warning though, this may not be the best "introductory" book as some basic knowledge of terms and persons is kind of presumed by the author. Additionally, this book aims to look at a specific aspect of Palestinian history - the quest for statehood - and not present an overview of Palestinian history itself. In any case, a remarkably good book from a consistently-excellent academic.

Every American should read three books by Rashid Khalidi: Palestinian Identify, The Iron Cage, and Brokers of Deceit. Without this background it is almost impossible to understand the present situation in Palestine/Israel and the attitudes of many in the Middle East toward America. With it, it is possible to make sense of what is going on, solve the problems, and make peace.
