Hands down one of the best books I've read this year. Not only is the voice amazing, the twists kept my heart racing (that is, when it wasn't wrenched from my body). Highly recommended for a thoroughly entertaining look at first love, cereal, and what it means to be a friend.
Time traveling and romance are two genres I like but never fully felt represented in, until now. Seeing blerdy Jack and Kate warmed this blerd’s heart and filled me with nostalgia of my own experience in High School, minus the time traveling. This book is about appreciating the best things in your life and learning not to take them for granted and I think that’s a valuable lesson to be learned.
This is a great read. The story is entertaining, witty, and does a great job of telling the tale of love.I recommend this as a read for young adults and older. Check it out!
This book was absolutely amazing. It takes you on an adventure of a lifetime in just under 500 pages. Time travel? Friendship? Romance? What more do you need? BUY IT NOW.
Opposite of Always follows a young man named Jack who one night while sitting on the steps at a party, meets Kate, who politely informs him that he’s blocking the stairway. They hit it off immediately and eventually fall in love. But unfortunately, things don’t go they way Jack had hoped because…Kate dies. Major bummer! But Jack and Kate’s story doesn’t end there. You see, shortly after Kate’s death, Jack is shot back in time and finds himself right back to the beginning, at the moment they first meet on the stairs, and Kate’s there again — alive, healthy and happy as though the past several months had never happened. So what the hell? Jack can’t help but wonder whether he’s going crazy or what. But if he’s not and he really did travel back in time, he decides that he’s going to do everything in his power to prevent Kate’s death.Of course, as is often the case with time-travel, there are always consequences to our actions, and in Jack’s case, they may even prove deadly for someone he cares about. In fact, each attempt by Jack disrupts something — destroys the balance in Jack’s life. So at some point, Jack has to decide just how far he’s willing to go so save Kate or is it just better to let her go?This is a very moving and heartfelt character-driven story about friendship, love, the choices we make and time-travel and asks us what we would do if we had the power to go back and alter the past. I thought this story was fascinating in its exploration of the multitude of dimensions and complexity of human relationships and how throwing one part off balance can create havoc with the other aspects.Opposite of Always was heartbreaking in places and laugh-out-loud funny in others, and there were many important lessons given in the story, but I shan’t say more as I don’t want to spoil the fun of figuring them out for yourself. But I will say that this was the kind of story that really kept me on edge, wondering whether this time, Jack would pull it off and save Kate. But there were also the wonderfully developed side-characters with their own history, drama, and subplots, who all felt just as real and just as important to me as the main characters. So really, this isn’t just a romance about Jack and Kate but it’s also about all of the other important people in both of their lives, and it illustrates how fragile our relationships with others can be.All in all, the Opposite of Always is a delightful novel about choices and consequences with lovable characters, witty dialog and an engrossing plot, and I loved the unique take on time travel here. I’m going to keep my eye on this author and can’t wait to see what he’ll come up with next.
I'm not normally a time travel person, but everything else about this is a "me" book. I love romance, contemporaries, and anything with great characters. In the end, I 'm glad I didn't skip over this book because only one part didn't appeal to me. I would have missed out on something amazing! When Jack and Kate meet at a party, they fall for each other.... Hard. But instead of the fun romance they should have had, things get complicated. Kate is sick and then she dies. But instead of mourning her, Jack is sent back to the beginning. Jack has no idea what he's supposed to do, just that something has to be different. It takes awhile, but Jack must repeat these few months over and over until he can get things right."Death isn't like I expect. [...] Death, it turns out, feels a lot like waking up."pg. 139 The ONLY thing I didn't care for about this one was the time travel aspect. I knew this was going to be an issue for me, so I'm not going to dwell too much on it. It's not that it was bad, but it was repetitive. And for it to be 450 pages, it was a bit much. I liked the way some of the aspects of the story changed with each "respawn" (for lack of a better word lmao) but after 5 times, again, it was a bit much. Everything else I adored. There are NO books about African Americans and romance and there are especially none with a male lead, so I LOVED this. It was super original and not like anything I'd read before. This book will definitely stand-out from other contemporary romances for various reasons. I also adored the romance. Kate brought such an amazing presence to this story and I thought she was so good for Jack. They were so cute together and I was hoping they made it so they could boh get what they wanted. Lastly, if you're planning on reading this one, get some tissues ready. It takes alot for me to cry real tears when I'm reading, (normally I get teary eyed but that's it) but this time I shed actual tears. And it wasn't just the one time lol It was every time they had to "respawn." Everytime it was so heart wrenching. Even after reading it four times I still wasn't ready for when it came up again. It's hard to believe this is a debut book because of how good and memorable it is. This book will definitely be one that I will remember because of the characters, the romance, and the time travel for a long time coming. I hope that you all will read and love this as much as I do.
