I am a returning adult college student currently studying Computer Science. Having taken 2 courses in each of the following languages; Java, C# and Visual Basic. I must say that the learning style in this book is head and shoulders above the standard language textbooks. I am not saying that I didn't learn anything from the standard textbooks, but the learning curve at times was pretty steep. In addition to that, reading Java (my main language of choice) API documentation sometimes feels like I am speaking another language compared to what is used in the documentation. I think this is because the standard 900 page language textbook, while full of great information, is often dull as corn flakes, and hard to read line by line. So I ended up missing a lot of key terminology. This book, while overly corny at some points, keeps you locked into the content. It is actually really hard to put this book down at times, even though the authors suggest that you take the chapters slow, so the information has time to sink in. I will be looking for more head first titles on other subjects in the future.

I needed to write a C program allowing red hat users to mount windows shared drives without sudo access. Having used Head First Java in the past, I picked up this book for the Head First method of teaching. Augmented with several trips to stackoverflow, a lot of man page reading, and a lot of time with gcc, I was able to bust out v1.0 of the program after a couple of weeks. I'd definitely recommend having learned another language first since C is like any other language, but moreso. Concepts such as strings, automatic garbage collection, even initializing variables are things that other languages take care of without you worrying about it. Not so in C.It's akin to learning how to drive with an automatic before graduating to a manual transmisison. I'd recommend learning something simple like perl/python and then coming back to C.Anyway, great book. While not as in-depth or comprehensive as K&R is, I much prefer the teaching style. That being said, there's a lot more to C than what's in this book, so if you have a very specific application in mind, there's lots more out there to discover.

Head First books are in my opinion the best way to learn programming languages. I'm 1/2 way through this book and am enjoying it. I tried to learn c before and gave up.I learned myI learned my first language with Head First Java and have since learned Actionscript, java script and c#. I tried learning c before but gave up. I decided to try again using Head First and am 1/2 way through the book.Starting to program with a high level language like Java definitely makes learning c easier.If you're comfortable with programming concepts this book is for you, otherwise get Head First Java first.

i was looking for an intro on C. .and of all the ones I found thisis the best. Other books get to technical for a begginers and they seem to drag before you get to some sample code. This book was a little different, there are lots of excercises and small sample codes that you can quickly thpe and compile and see it in action fast. I like approach better because I learn more from seeing sample code, breaking it down to see how howmit works and build from there. The other issues with some other books that i didnt run into with this is no C++ . Some people want as taste of c++ and may not like this book. I was looking into just c and this fit the plan nicely.

Another excellent Head First title. C is not really as complicated as you might think.Don't let what you've heard about it intimidate you. This is an excellent introduction. Combine this with "Understanding and Using C Pointers" and you'll be loving C in no time. It's a fun, powerful language that has stood the test of time.

I have a master's degree in education and am almost 50/50 as a tactile/visual learner with little in auditory. While the approach taken in this book may work well for some, it is too busy for me.

I got my son this book for his 8th birthday. This is a great teaching book - clear & precise concept explanations without waffling on.If an 8 year old can understand array pointer dereferencing , it means that this book is a success.I thought about purchasing the Effective C# book, but I didn't want my kid to grow up to be a mindless LOB app drone.I am looking forward to purchasing Head First C++11.

Exceptional book. Not for a casual reader but underpinnings are Political Science so it breaks things down in an orderly, deeply explained manner. Examples used are based up to the late 20th century when the book was written. The book still applies to current world situations but reader is left to make those connections on their own.

Leadership is a secondary source history/political science book drawing on historical examples, psychology, and some philosophical concepts on governance. Burns goal with the book is to establish a foundation for the study of leadership, combining the studies of the leaders themselves and the followers. It covers the individual traits of leaders, their relationship to followers, and how they managed to accomplish great things or have such great impact.This textbook has a number of stylistic problems that make it difficult to read, despite its interesting substance. Its organization is shaky and many of the chapters and sections have no clear intro or conclusion to tie his thesis together. The book is a dry, boring read that meanders between secondary sources, historical anecdotes, and the author's own biased perceptions.Burns seems to be trying to place a lateral beam across several pillars with his leadership school. This isn't nearly as groundbreaking as the blurbs on the back of the book claim. Burns' conclusions are limited in scope, and don't leave a strong impression on the reader.He overuses Sigmund Freud, conceding that psychoanalysis of historical figures is not particularly accurate or helpful, then goes forward and uses it anyway. He identifies few patterns, constantly going back to the same old "blame the parents" approach to psychoanalysis. His occasional delving into the sexual habits of famous leaders was purely conjecture and not worthy of this text.Burns narration of historical events and the rise of certain leaders is mediocre. It isn't heavy on detail, yet the prose is still difficult to follow. The historical examples do not clearly demonstrate his thesis. He provides limit context, assuming the reader is fully apprised of the historical events. This is arrogant and lazy. I can only assume the book is meant for a graduate-level audience who have strong backgrounds in history and political science. It certainly wasn't marketed this way (Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award).Burns take on Mao Zedong was troubling to me. In Mao's case, his leadership ended when he took power at which point he became a tyrant. By Burns own admission, a tyranny is not leadership. He speaks glowingly of these revolutions despite the bloodshed, poverty, misery, and war it brought to the respective countries. His positive view of the Cultural Revolution in China is absolutely stunning, ignoring its atrocities and utter failure.The book was published in 1978, so some of these events were contemporary. We know more today about the Soviet Union and the experiences of Communist China in the 20th century. It is fair to say Burns was very wrong in his opinion of these two political systems and their relevance to his school of leadership. The other sections are much better.Why give it 3 stars with all these problems? Burns combines multiple disciplines for a fairly reasonable case against compartmentalizing social sciences (this was his implicit objective). His study of leadership became the basis for later works, especially those covering popular and business leadership. Finally, I for the most part agree with his primary thesis and the supporting definitions early in the book. So it gets an average grade from me.

Nearly 40 years old, the book is still the gold standard for leadership and power studies. Looking at multiple leaders and leadership styles, Burns brings a readability and scholarly rigor to the topic. A must read.

The world of leadership is examined through a sweeping assessment on its power and purpose to its origins in James MacGregor Burns's book, Leadership. This book is a very comprehensive overview of the study of leadership as it distinguishes not only what are the two basic styles of leadership: transforming and transactional, but evaluates the theory and practice of leadership skills as well. Burns stated in Leadership, "I define leadership as leaders inducing followers to act for certain goals that represent the values and the motivations¬-the wants and needs, the aspirations and expectations-of both leaders and followers" (19). Throughout the book, Burns discussed the leadership styles of political leaders to religious and social leaders. From Martin Luther King, Jr to Moses to Mahatma Gandhi to Napoleon, plus Machiavelli and even Adolf Hitler, Burns cited how these leaders made vital distinctions between wants and needs. According to Burns, "the process of leadership must be seen as part of the dynamics of conflict and of power; that leadership is nothing if not linked to collective purpose; that the effectiveness of leaders must be judged not by their press clippings but by actual social change measured by intent and by the satisfaction of human needs and expectations" (3).

Burns is a great writer. He knows how to express the essence of his thoughts and opinions on a topic that is familiar to most readers but not always completely understood. Through well recognized leaders, Burns provides examples and insights of leadership.

The writing is mostly from 1st person perspective (Pilgrim's). The antagonist's part also is about 2/3 first person. I wish the end Mr. Hayes would write some of it from Saracen's (antagonist) POV.It's a quick read despite 700+ pages. The stream of consciousness first person POV also made me LOL quite a few times. Mr. Hayes has a good dose of sarcastic sense of humor. :-)

From the outset the writing captivated me. I once read that we are not captivated by a book's subject matter; we are captivated by the way it is written. Terry Hayes is a masterful writer. Every word, every sentence, every paragraph exquisitely crafted. He could have been writing about ANYTHING and I would have been captivated. The story is complex and nuanced, shifting from first person to third, present to flashback; the plot is dangerously complex, but Hayes manages to pull all of the threads together into a beautifully woven, textured fabric (when was the last time you heard anyone describe a thriller like THAT). Some have criticized Hayes for this, no doubt longing for the point A-to-B plot, annoying sentence structure and over-the-top special effects that populate Dan Brown's novels and made reading them so tedious. Hayes's characters are well-defined and dimensional; even the antagonist, the Saracen, was so finely crafted that I found myself sympathizing, empathizing and hoping that he would realize his revenge. In other words, Hayes creates characters the reader can care about even if they are doing evil, hateful things. Far from being distracting (some readers and reviewers here clearly have short attention spans and a limited capacity for abstract thinking) the flashbacks and digressions greatly enriched the journey -- some of them would provide ample material for novels of their own!! I am looking forward to Hayes's next novel (do I really have to wait until 2018???) and, in the meantime, I heartily recommend this read. Even if you do not like the subject matter, even if you do not like the genre, you will be captivated by craftsmanship of a master wordsmith.

A flavor of noir-detective (but not too "hard boiled") at the beginning of novel, combined with secret agent thriller as main ingredient. Far better than many of the novels in these genres--more depth in character development and plot, greater accuracy and detail in depictions of geography, culture, government and covert operations, etc. The two adversaries ("Saracen" and "Pilgrim") are equally brilliant and dangerous; even the secondary characters are well developed, i.e., "Ben" of the NYPD. "I am Pilgrim" by Terry Hayes involves an intelligent, complex plot that transports the reader from various locations, including the U.S., Middle East, Europe and Russia. Most spy thrillers skate you through action and more action (like the "Jason Bourne" series), often using a worn-out template for plot and character development. If you want to take a deep dive into a unique and brilliant spy thriller, I highly recommend that you read this novel. Also, check out the author's bio--it made me realize why he is a such a fine writer.[Feb. 2018--P.S.: Author James Patterson's book, "Instinct" (formerly "Murder Games"), will be the basis for a new TV series, "Instinct", on CBS this March. Patterson's book was originally published in 2017, Hayes' in 2013. The premise is virtually identical: An author and university professor comes out of retirement as a CIA operative when a NYPD detective asks for his help--the serial killer is using the professor's book as a tutorial. This makes me wonder about the originality of Patterson's novel, since it was published 4 years past Hayes' novel. In any case, Hayes is a MUCH better writer, engaging one in a complex globe-trekking thriller. If you want to choose between the two books, pick "I am Pilgrim". Brilliant!]

I cannot stop telling everyone I know that THIS is the book that they MUST read this summer. Normally I avoid spy-thrillers; in my past experience they tend to be formulaic and predictable with mediocre writing. Terry Hayes' "I Am Pilgrim" totally blew up those misconceptions. I won't bother with a detailed summary (the book jacket does an excellent job of recapping), but basically the book follows the path of a retired super spy officer who finds himself being pulled back into the intelligence game. Trust me, you are not going to run into any cliches here; what you'll find is a well executed story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.While on the longer side, once you are in, you will FLY through this novel. Hayes does an excellent job of maintaining and building momentum, while keeping his pacing consistent and even. What I enjoyed most is that Hayes writes for the smart reader - the type of person who doesn't want everything explained but enjoys well-thought out details. With each chapter, you almost feel like part of the story, tagging along on Pilgrim's coattails as he races around the world.Oh, and the characters! Pilgrim is by far one of the best protagonists I've encountered - clever, witty, self-deprecating, but all in a way that makes you wish you could go grab a drink together.There is so much that I enjoyed about this novel but don't want to give away.... Needless to say, friends- please go and pick up a copy ASAP so we can discuss.
