Review
“This is the best memoir I’ve read by an athlete since Andre Agassi’s Open. It’s a candid, moving account of the thrills and toils of achieving greatness-and then sustaining it. I could not put it down, and you will not want it to end.” (Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take)“Brave and revealing…more than any athlete I have read about, Wambach is open about the touches and glances and courtships and breakups in her private life.” (George Vecsey)“Forward is the powerful story of an athlete who has inspired girls all over the world to believe in themselves...Abby is deeply honest about her professional and life challenges - and she shows us by example how to overcome problems and live a happier, braver life.” (Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO and New York Times bestselling author of Lean In)“Abby Wambach is an American hero whose grit and heart has paved the way for the next generation of women and girls.” (Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, New York Times bestselling author of Ashley's War and The Dressmaker of Khair Khana)“Lucid and wrenching...Forward puts [Wambach’s] achievement in context with painful and beautiful candor.” (NPR)“Inspirational…harrowing.” (The Guardian)“Candid, thoughtful…while the sports stories are included, this is not a book celebrating on-field triumphs: it’s a book about one woman’s journey to put her remarkable talents into context and accept herself.” (Booklist)“Raw, vulnerable and courageous… rarely do professional athletes open that door all the way.” (Curve Magazine)“One of the most accomplished athletes of her generation tells her story with honesty and heart. A relevant choice for any modern sports collection.” (Library Journal)“Required reading” (AFTERELLEN)

From the Back Cover
Abby Wambach has always pushed the limits of what is possible. At age seven she was put on the boys’ soccer team. At age thirty-five she would become the highest goal scorer—male or female—in the history of soccer, capturing the nation’s heart with her team’s 2015 World Cup Championship. Called an inspiration and “badass” by President Obama and “the soul of the United States team” by the New York Times, Abby has become a fierce advocate for women’s rights and equal opportunity, pushing to translate the success of her team to the real world. As Abby reveals in this searching memoir, her professional success often masked her inner struggle to reconcile the various parts of herself: ferocious competitor, daughter, leader, wife. With stunning candor, Abby shares her inspiring and often brutal journey from girl in Rochester, New York, to world-class athlete. Far more than a sports memoir, Forward is a gripping tale of resilience and redemption—and a reminder that heroism is, above all, about embracing life’s challenges with fearlessness and heart.

This is the first time I've read a memoir from beginning to end without putting it down once. Captivating. It takes a lot of courage to put all these shortcomings out there for the world to read. At the same time this is another good reminder for us fans, that behind the fame these celebrities are real human beings dealing with real issues. Would recommend this book.
Incredibly revealing and introspective, this memoir gives you a sense of the perfectly imperfect stellar Abby. I read it all in one sitting, and was impressed by what she chose to share. Loved her before, and since reading her story, love her even more.
Abby's passion and heart made me a soccer fan during her Olympic Games. I still am. Her book is brutally honest and so well written. This is a courageous woman -she was as a player and is in telling her story- in a way that is relatable. I've felt a lot of what she has - and felt alone because I thought I had to be the only one. Abby is the GOAT as far as I'm concerned. May her retirement bring her peace and love abundantly-so she can spread them both on her way to changing the world.
I loved and admired Abby for the soccer player that entertained millions. I now respect her for the journey she took to become that player and for the fight she has just begun.
Wowza, from one Gemini to another, your story was so thoroughly honest and upfront. I enjoyed seeing your career unfold in this book and it's inspiring to know, that even with our faults, our flaws and our mistakes, we are all just human. Real. Raw. Natural. Great book and I definitely recommend this story.
Super human, vulnerable and awesomely real. I could not stop reading, im a bigger fan of wambach than ever before.
This is a fabulous read for all ages. She hits the issues head on and confronts some difficult times in her life with grace and poise. She offers insight into the world of women's soccer that is interesting and enlightening. She discusses everything from soccer to her relationships to coming out as a lesbian to addiction. Abby and her co-author did an amazing job! I would honestly read it again!
Autobiography by a great soccer player (beat Mia Hamm's record). Not only a gifted athlete, Abby is a fabuous motivational speaker, inspirational to young girls everywhere. Unfortunately, there is a dark side where she never felt loved enough or good enough to be loved which results in some drug and alcohol issues. This is a very revealing book of highs and lows.
