Rapid Access Guide for Triage and Emergency Nurses: Chief Complaints with High Risk Presentations

Review

As a seasoned nurse with experience in the triage arena, I can unequivocally say that the Rapid Access Guide for Triage and Emergency Nurses is well-written, beautifully designed, comprehensive, convenient to use, and fully evidence-based. Triage sits at the gateway to urgent and emergent care, and this guide can alleviate the bottlenecks, confusions, and missteps that weaken the triage process, endanger patients, and otherwise throw a wrench in what should be a well-oiled assessment machine. The arrangement by body systems increases the guide’s usefulness in chaotic situations, and the red flag warnings are highlights that any triage nurse would be prudent to make note of and memorize. From comprehensive behavioral health assessment to life-threatening cardiac or respiratory emergencies, the Rapid Access Guide for Triage and Emergency Nurses offers the evidence-based information for triage and emergency nurses who want to be at the top of their game. (Keith Carlson, BSN, RN, NC-BC Nurse Career Coach, Podcaster, Author, Speaker)"...Every nurse should have access to this wonderfully easy to use guide. It encompasses all situations in a clear and straightforward manner." (Echo Heron NY Times Best Selling Author)Rapid Access Guide for Triage and Emergency Nurses focuses on patients that require immediate intervention. This book is indeed a "book of brains" and a "collection of wisdom" all rolled up in a compact size book! Concise triage information is easy to read and zooms in on the most important points. It is a must for every nurse that is met with emergencies. (Laura Gasparis Vonfrolio, RN, PdD)

I preordered this rapid access guide and couldn’t be more happy with the product. It’s such a comprehensive, portable, and thorough resource for anyone in the healthcare field. It is specially geared towards triage and emergency nurses and offers basic assessment guidelines, useful checklists for a wide variety of medical emergencies, special considerations for the different types of emergencies, and a variety of other useful information . This rapid access guide not only functions as a quick reference guide, but also as a great read for anyone interested in refreshing or learning about emergency nursing. It’s an easy read because the material is organized, concise, and applicable. I currently work as an EMT and I’m just a few months away from completing my BSN, so I wanted a portable, concise resource to better prepare me for the field of emergency medicine. Couldn’t be happier with this guide!I also highly recommend“Fast Facts for the Triage Nurse: An Orientation and Care Guide in a Nutshell” which is also a great reference.

Great resource book!

Disclosure: I rec'd a pre-publication copy for review, and have published this review in the Journal of Legal Nurse Consulting. I can see this handy booklet in my lab coat pocket with well-worn colored tabs in the most-used sections, full of scribbles, and irreplaceable in practice. While the book is aimed at the working triage/ER nurse, I think that students would also benefit by its concise format, lots of room for notes, and comprehensive index for care of a variety of conditions in any setting."This is a follow-up book to the authors’ previous award-winning Fast Facts for the Triage Nurse (2015) (with Valerie Aaren Grossman, MALS, BSN, RN). While Fast Facts includes guidance for key procedures and protocols for EDs and urgent care, the Rapid Access Guide leads the working triage nurse to achieving the goal of triage itself: Identifying patients who must have immediate or rapid intervention. Legal nurse consultants would also find this extensively-referenced handbook invaluable in triage in their own settings to answer intake screen questions about initial emergency management for the retaining attorney, evaluate subsequent assessment and care, and obtain supportive references on standards and policies."The inspiration for this pocket-sized work was the authors’ collective “Book of Brains,” a compilation of notes and insights from over fifty collective years of emergency care practice. Readers will be rewarded from the first pages with easy-to-read lists of terms and abbreviations, screening tools, and checklists, thoughtfully designed with plenty of white space to write or paste in any supplemental materials for customization, e.g., policies, protocols, phone numbers, and resources."The authors use icons to identify “red-flag” findings and special considerations for pediatrics or geriatrics. This book sets out the priority questions, assessments, and interventions to determining patient level of urgency for the most commonly seen presentations in alphabetical order for easy reference. These include• Trauma, neurological, cardiac, and respiratory emergencies• Sepsis, infectious disease emergencies• Burn emergencies• Toxicology emergencies• Abdominal emergencies• OB/GYN and male reproductive emergencies• Eye, ear, nose, and throat emergencies• Behavioral health emergencies• Active shooter/violence/disaster management"Each is formatted into three sections: Chief Complaint, Red Flag Findings, and Key Tips, e.g., core measures, worst-case scenarios, and suggestions for other chapters to check for related information. Each section, in turn, gives an easy-to-scan table with questions to ask, assessment, and interventions. A separate initial section prominently provides rapid screening checklists for time-critical immediate decisions for possible STEMI, stroke, and sepsis."

As a 40-year paramedic and disaster coordinator, I wish this book had been available decades ago. It contains concise information on a wealth of healthcare conditions and much more.Besides being a valuable personal reference, I consider this book a force multiplier for every facility's next surge event. It should be at the fingertips of every practitioner who may have to act decisively during the next multi/mass casualty, hazardous materials, active assailant, or other critical incident. I see its value in emergency receivers' pockets, as well as in ample supply with disaster supply caches. When the front-line emergency team is overwhelmed by the number or complexity of patients in these low frequency/high impact incidents, this book can help any practitioner to make the right decisions to protect the team and provide care for the casualties. Not only for emergency nurses, but for intake staff in any healthcare facility where an acute emergency might occur or an acute patient might self-present. I recommend this guide for every clinic and urgent care front desk.I envision this guide with sticky tabs added by their owners to speed access to those sections most commonly needed or, conversely, least commonly referenced but most critical to protecting staff and providing for patients. Well worth having in every healthcare provider's pocket or library. With that said, it should be a large pocket. At 400 pages, this is not a shirt-pocket reference, but should be close at hand.
