In "Among Friends", Heather Murray, an American-educated Canadian who resides in Switzerland, shares her personal account of three visits to Cuba over the past several years, the last in 2015. The first trip to Havana, occasioned by an invitation to speak at a conference of English teachers, describes the contradictory beauty, warmth and impoverished reality of life in the Havana that we have heard so much about. However, Ms. Murray's friendship with a struggling Cuban English professor with whom she had long corresponded introduces her to the daily life and intimate histories of a fascinating cast of Cuban citizens. Her accounts of her two later trips to the Cuban countryside to visit Julian's family and small towns and cities remote from Havana, eloquently describe life seldom seen by outside visitors. Her descriptions of both the land and the people are vivid, Her accounts are personal and often touching. Her approach is open, thoughtful and well informed by her knowledge of history, politics and geography.. By the end, you feel as if you too know the individual Cubans she has come to know. Absolute best Cuba book I have read! Heather's insight into the people and culture are so on point and the ways she describes things as she is showing the buildings, towns, food, people transports me back to Cuba. If you want just one book about Cuba beyond a travel guide, this is it!
Among friends – travels in Cubais a good read that reaches beyond the usual touristic and folkloristic aspects of Cuba.It’s the author’s personal account of a number of visits she paid to Cuba since 2008, pleasant to read, with a good sense of humor.I enjoyed reading about the life of ordinary citizens in Cuba, how they live, work and cope with many shortages and outdated equipment. Chaotic traffic in obsolete vehicles in the cities and on the few bumpy roads give a lively picture of what traveling is like in Cuba. Sounds like fun. Not to forget a great number of quaint old buildings in the cities and unexpected beautiful scenery. It’s also about social justice versus freedom of opinion, about friendship and human kindness. Interaction with occidental tourists provides food for thought.

The history and culture of Cuba through the eyes of a Canadian/Swiss woman is sweetly , intelligently written. A pleasure and an education to learn about thewonderful, strong people of Cuba and their stories, well reported.Any reader will want to go to Cuba, but will also wish for Murray's "guides" and connections, not so easily found.
