I somehow managed to read the first four Patrick O'Brian Aubrey-Maturin novels without this book.....because I didn't know it existed! Boy, am I glad I found this book! The maps and non-spoiler chapter summaries are quite helpful; a LOT easier than trying to balance a full sized World Atlas on my lap while reading a novel, and more specific. If you want to figure out where the Sophie defeated the Cacafuego, or where Desolation Island is (probably) located, you need this book on the coffee table while you're reading the novels themselves.
This has a lot of great information, but so much is lacking as well. I could use an overall explanation of what a ship of the line resemble, for example. Maps were useful. It could have been so much more
I have been re-reading the Aubrey/Maturin novels this summer and I got this guide as a way of additional help in understanding the details of the books. While reading the books I had some rough kind of idea of the routes taken by Jack's various commands or the various locations of Steven's adventures. This book is worth the purchase cost for the maps of their cruises alone. As I rewatch each book I religiously look over the map associated with each book.I also enjoy the essays attached to each book, though I wish it included some modern photos of the various sites and locations instead of only contemporary prints and engravings. Some of the woodcuts and drawings were not as informative as a photograph might be.But for anyone wanting to build a group of reference books on Patrick O'Brian's novels, this should be one of the first books to get.
I just loved this companion to the Aubrey/Maturin series. I loved the quick and informative discussions of winds and currents and ships and the historical context. Nothing to do with ships and sails is familiar to me. I love the series for its human historicity and Patrick O'Brian's prose, among the most graceful ever written. While reading the first few books, I went back time and again to figure out which sails went where and lees from larboards. I take the point of some reviewers that they could have done with a few more maps and a bit more historical and technical material instead of the plot summaries, but I disagree. Because I chose not to rush through the series in a couple of months, but instead read them slowly over several years, I enjoyed going back and reading through the summaries before I began each installment. "Harbors and High Seas" added immeasurably to my enjoyment of the Aubrey/Maturin series. Bravo to Dean King for the research and the passion that he clearly has for the novels.
Things I've long wondered about like wind and currents are now clear to me. Good information abounds. One reviewer was miffed about being told the storyline of each novel, but I have no problem with that. As I work further into the collection it will be good to be able to go back and refresh my memory of what came before. Also, I have no problem reading the plot of an Aubrey book before I read it because my involvement is going to be so intense that knowing the plot (if I even remember it once launched) is irrelevant.
Good Reference Book
My husband has the entire series of books about Captain Aubrey, this was an added touch to his collection.
Great book very useful when reading or listening to the Aurbrey series.
