Great and fast service.
I am so glad that this has finally been translated into English. The stories paint an authentic insiders view of Israel in a way you will not see anywhere else. Gil Hovav is brilliantly honest and funny, this is a great read.
Great story telling spiced with great humor. Very enjoyable.I wish Mr. Hovav would use this book to develop a story-telling show, and bring it to NYC.
Gil Hovav is the David Sedaris of Israel. With recipes! These essays capture the fiery zip-family, food, friendship-of Israel with wit and charm. I'm pining for a Moomah (sassy Grandma) and Bourekas with eggplant (recipe, page 261.
A wonderful author!
It is so much fun to read the intimate details of a sassy family and then get to taste what they're eating too. Candies from Heaven is fun, easy, edgy, smart and sweet - often on one page. The book made me want to be part of Hovav's family, made me yearn for an Israel of the past and a kind family full of spunk! The embedded recipes are a small "in" to that world. Reading the book is like a gift, and I've gifted it to a few people already.
This is one of my favorite books, and I've read to my children several times, to howls of laughter (kept the sad parts for myself). Gil's loving tales of his sometimes wacky family are a delight.
Gil Hovav has written the most interesting, tender and funny account of his childhood. In so doing so, he also succeeds in informing us of the diverse cultural mix that was the foundation of Israel.
