I'm trucking through this book in digital form. It is not a good read. It hops around through history and I can't keep the people and places straight. It would be nice if there were maps. It's clearly meant to be portrayed visually (like on on TV) and not in a book. I'm near halfway through the book and so far it seems like the Irish have been at war since the beginning of time. Is that all the Irish have to contribute to the historical narrative? I don't think so, but this book makes it seem like it. I've been through like 4 centuries at this point and all they've been doing the whole time is slaughtering and being slaughtered. I get that war is a part, maybe even a big part, of Irish history, but it would've been nice if the author hadn't made the Irish seem like complete savages.
A very comprehensive book written with passion & obvious knowledge. Not as much detail in some areas which interest me but never the less entertaining. The book would have needed to be twice as long to give more detail - which is unreasonable. People with no previous knowledge of the history of Ireland will come away with a reasonable grounding of how the Irish got to where they are today. There are many, many other books which will fill in the detail.
I have a digital copy and I think it's a very enjoyable book despite that it isn't edited well or maybe even not edited at all.
Concise, but not sparing in important detail. Objective and truthful to all sides of a contentious history. I needed addition to any library of Irish history.
Really liked the format even though there is a lot of repeat from episodes. Wish there was more from 1960 on.
Great historical book. I learned a lot more of what was behind the fighting throughout the history there.
Super good History of the emerald Isle
Recommended to me by an Irish friend who now lives in the U.S. - he had high praise for it and caused us to purchase the book after a visit to Ireland a couple of years ago.
