About the Author
Dr. Terry Morris is a Professor at William Rainey Harper College, where she led the development of the Web Development degree and certificate programs. Her academic credentials include a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree from Northcentral University, a Master of Science degree in Information Systems and various certifications, including Microsoft Certified Professional and Master CIW Designer. A former information systems analyst and software developer, Terry began prototyoping Web applications as early as 1996. She's been teaching Web Development courses at Harper College since 1999 and led the creation of one of the first community college Web Development Certificate and Associate of Applied Science programs in the State of Illinois. Harper College was also one of the first institutions of higher education in Illinois to offer a certificate focusing on Web accessibility, the Accessible Web Design & Compliance Certificate.A long-time promoter of Web standards, Terry has been a member of The Web Standards Project (WasP) Education Task Force Curriculum Project, which is an effort to engage web design and education professionals in collaboration to develop a curriculum framework for web professionals. The Web Development & Design Foundations with XHTML textbook is designated as a recommended reference book for the curriculum. Provides general ideas and too many errors. Book should have been pre-read before production. Don't expect the book to cover all the details you need to know. Again, just general ideas with samples. My professor explanations and examples were much better in comparison to the book.
It's nice not to have to cart the book around, but you still need a computer, e-reader, etc. The biggest issue I have is when my instructor says to read or complete exercises on certain pages. The e-version doesn't have page numbers so I waste a lot of time emailing to get the exact spot she is referring to. I also found printed copies that were cheaper and not used and think that the e-version should be cheaper since you don't have the luxury of having it open right next you.I probably won't buy an e-version next time, at least for text books.
Much older version than newest programs, but we'll written
I do not have time to do this review justice right now. This was not the first or last book I purchased that was written by one of the College's Professor. It was very good. The author was also my instructor for the class. She was perhaps the best I had at the College. Certainly the best of the Web Development. The book is very good for what it is: a foundations book. I also found it a handy reference when I worked on advanced projects for more advanced Web development courses. Terry said she intentianlly wrote it with that intent in mind.
I'm always reluctant to buy textbooks for school. I'm a person who learns by doing, not by reading. I was worried this book would be a waste of time and money like most of my other required school textbooks. But I was wrong! This book is really easy to follow, very clear and thorough, and has a bunch of great hands-on exercises. You can get into it quickly and easily and start learning XHTML. I learned a ton from this book, in just a few weeks. I highly recommend it!
I was looking for this book for a course at BCIT in Vancouver. The regular price of this book is $127. I found it for nearly half that price here on Amazon.com. The book is written in such a way that it breaks down the individual components and explains them in the easiest possible way. It also offers a plethora of examples, links to sites and a website companion that provides you with all the files for homework and follow-along during explanation. Great book, even better price
I used Head First HTML book before this one, and comparatively this one is much much better. The examples and the exercises provide the perfect opportunity to practice what you've read. The book also really gives you a solid understanding not only in XHTML necessary to build a website, but the steps to designing and structuring the layout as well. Really excellent.
I bought this book for school a few years ago, now I'm a professional Web Developer!
