Review
“Rosolie is a gripping storyteller. . . . His enthusiasm for the wilderness and his ability to convey it poetically makes him an exceedingly persuasive advocate for conserving what’s left of the natural world.” (BookPage)“Rosolie’s solo adventures in the heart of the Amazon jungle, up close and personal with giant anacondas and jaguars, are gripping. And his dedication to preserving one of the earth’s last wildernesses is where he really sets himself apart. Mother of God is an awe-inspiring read.” (Bear Grylls)“A great adventure with a great and enduring point: we simply must protect these last, vast slices of the planet that still work the way they’re supposed to.” (Bill McKibben)“Thanks to fastidious journal-keeping that preserved a wealth of detail and emotion, Rosolie delivers an old-fashioned jungle adventure, one with rare immediacy and depth of feeling for the people and creatures he encounters.” (The Wall Street Journal)“Paul Rosolie’s Mother of God is more than a thrilling adventure tale, it’s an old-fashioned boy-meets-jungle love story. Be prepared to fall for it.” (Mark Adams, author of Turn Right at Machu Pichu)“An extraordinary book…His vivid writing immerses you in his adventures as he explores an ancient pristine forest where no white man has been, where he encounters amazing creatures, and experiences the relentless power of untamed nature…There are parts that will haunt you, scenes you will never forget.” (Jane Goodall)“A gripping adventure story filled with plenty of adrenaline-filled encounters with massive snakes, intimidating jaguars and other creatures. . . . A vividly written narrative of an amazingly diverse world still to be explored, whose destruction, as Rosolie wisely notes, would be a devastating loss for humanity.” (Kirkus)“A rousing eco-adventure. . . . This is old-school nature writing, unabashedly romantic and free of alienation. . . . Rosolie’s powers of description are so vivid and engrossing that readers will be swept along in his passion.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Rosolie writes with intrepid curiosity and a passion for ecological preservation.” (Booklist)“A sobering account of an ecosystem hanging in the balance. . . . An insightful history of the region. . . . Entertaining and revelatory.” (The Wichita Eagle)

From the Back Cover
When Paul Rosolie, a restless eighteen-year-old hungry for adventure, embarked on a journey to the western Amazon in 2006, he didn't know that it would transform his life. In the Madre de Dios ("Mother of God") region of Peru, where the Amazon River begins, the cloud forests of the Andes converge with the lowland Amazon rain forest to create the most biodiverse wilderness on the planet. In a true story of adventure and discovery that spans more than nine years, Rosolie takes us into the most inaccessible reaches of the Amazon. Along the way, he encounters massive snakes, isolated tribes, prowling jaguars, giant anteaters, and much more in the Wild West of the natural world. It is a journey into the last great wilderness that ultimately asks the question of our time: How much longer will these places exist? The primordial depths of the Madre de Dios are in grave danger.Mother of God is the story of an amazing odyssey into the heart of the wildest place on earth. But as Rosolie delves deeper into the heart of the jungle, he finds things he never imagined could exist. And as the legendary explorer Percy Fawcett warned, "The few remaining unknown places of the world exact a price for their secrets."

Vivid is the best word I can use to describe this book. This year, I have read several "Amazon adventure" type books, beginning with The Lost City of Z, and then The Lost City of the Monkey God, and finally this one...and this one might be my favorite. As other reviewers have commented, this book takes you right into the Amazon with the author, and you really can envision the wondrous world he describes as if you are right there with him, stalking predators and observing thousands of species. This story gets right into the action, and places the reader right where you want to be - in a hammock listening to wild bird calls, crawling on the jungle floor looking for ants, floating down a river surrounded by the real possibility of getting lost forever. The author is honest and young, and has a very good grasp on his privilege in the world and how he might be able to use that to save the jungle he grows to love. It's really an astounding tale, with great imagery and real tension. If you like adventure in mysterious places, this is a great pick!
This is an exceptionally well written adventure and eye-opening narrative of author Paul Rosalie’s experiences in some of the most remote areas of the Peruvian Amazon.Paul’s mission began with a passion for nature and exploration which ultimately focused his efforts on conservation and protection for this lost living Eden. His activities in this tropical rain forest are unsurpassable...extremely a page turner with jaguars, giant anacondas, anteaters and river otters, colossal-size caimans, dodgy poachers, loggers and miners, the floating forest, so much. This is an area now threatened with the Trans-Amazon Highway which in due course will have undesirable consequences on the unique and unusual life in this corner of the world. As the celebrated naturalist Humboldt once said, “Everything is interrelatedâ€...in other words, take one piece out of the puzzle and nothing is the same again...results can be devastating. Not only high-adventure in the jungle, but also a personal story of one’s inner self to safeguard what really matters to themselves, others, life and the planet.
A definite read that will be leaving you on the edge of your seat, 'Mother of God' is about one young guy's urge to escape the concrete jungle of where he grew up and immerse himself in an unconventional life being a naturalist in the Amazon, where he found fulfillment and happiness. From his adventures traveling solo in the Amazon and encountering peccaries, anacondas and caimans, to finding love in India, Rosolie keeps you interested from one chapter to the next. This book also serves as an important tool to educate on the destruction of Earth's last great wilderness, and just how important conservation is, not only for the Amazon, but all the remaining natural areas of our planet. As Rosolie points out, this generation could be the last to see the Amazon in it's current state before mankind devours it in the need of progress, which I hope humanity will never get that far. Give this book a read and expand your mind!
As a person who loves nature, and an environmentalist who has a deep feeling for biodiversity, I LOVED this book. Couldn't put it down. Sat in a chair from morning til night, getting up only for bare essentials, until I'd finished it. Gave it to my friends and they raved about it. Just the title, Mother of God, had intrigued me because, whatever people meant when they named this tributary of the Amazon Madre de Dios, the name infers to me how a rainforest river is the birthplace of an explosion of life. I liked the author a lot. His explorations are courageous, his story is amazing, he is an excellent writer. His desire to be a scientist, but live and write as a lover of what he studies is on the right course. This book is how I want to be taken to the Amazon or any other wild place as a reader. It made me want to go there, despite snakes, crocodiles and mosquitoes. His recent exploit, after the book was published, of trying to get eaten by an Anaconda for a film (which can be seen on YouTube)is not on a right course. Perhaps the great success of his book has gone to his head. I was appalled, but scientists and environmentalists alike often have to figure out whether they are going to promote the environment or promote themselves; save nature or exploit it for fame; live one's life or make an exhibition of it. Rosolie is young, he has all the makings of a great modern explorer, he has time to make mistakes and learn from them. I hope he survives whatever attack of terrible judgement caused him to undertake getting swallowed by an anaconda, that he continues his documentation of the wild Amazonian rainforest, lives humbly and writes more books like this.
