It's exactly what I was looking for.
The book is good, but I was expecting better pics and more useful information about tailoring, it's a big review of famous tailors and brands.
Beautiful book. This would be a perfect book to get the idea of what is bespoke. This would be the perfect book for a tailor or seamstress waiting room.
Great overview of bespoke menswear. My son read this prior to some work in bespoke fashion. I highly recommend this book.
This book is a great overview of Bespoke Menswear.
Mr. Roetzel's "Bespoke Menswear: Tailoring for Gentlemen" deals with bespoke menswear: clothing sewn by hand from individual patterns with fittings at the tailor during the production process. The book excludes two other categories of clothing: made-to-measure and ready-to-wear.The book goes through bespoke suits, shirts and ties. The stages of the production for each part (suit, shirt, tie) are shown with color photos. Each part also has a list of terminology. Mr. Roetzel mentions three types of fit when it comes to suits: English, Italian, and German. This is not the usual categorization. Usually an American type is mentioned alongside the English and Italian instead of a German. The book also deals with the subject of fabrics.The second objective of the book - besides describing the process of hand-sewn suits, shirts and ties - seems to be to present a large number of reputable tailors that offer these products. Each tailor is given a couple of pages, which includes photos of the tailor and his or her premises and text describing the tailors background and current production. The selection of tailors presented, among many possible candidates, seem in part to reflect Mr. Roetzel's own liking rather than more objective selection criteria.The book is huge in size and rather heavy, but it contains a lot of useful information and well-taken photos for the interested in bespoke menswear. The book is advanced reading and would probably not be suitable as the first book if you are interested in menswear and need an introduction. In that case, Mr. Roetzel's book "A Guy's Guide to Style" is better or "The Handbook of Style: A Man's Guide to Looking Good" by Esquire. After these introductory books, you could read Mr. Roetzels's famous book "Gentleman: A Timeless Guide to Fashion", as intermediate reading. After that, you are well prepared for this book.Mr. Roetzel's "Bespoke Menswear: Tailoring for Gentlemen" does not cover bespoke shoes. For information about bespoke shoes turn to "Handmade Shoes for Men" by Vass and Molnar.
The books is well made up to hf Ullmann's usual standard, however I felt that the contents could have been better. I have read most of Mr Roetzel's books and I felt that this books could have gone further, much further. The books outlines the bespoke process and as an introduction to the subject is a good book but...The bespoke tailors appear to be those that Mr Roetzel uses himself and does not appear to include any other master tailors, which is a negative. It covers various issues briefly but always leave you wanting more (and this is not a novel), which is a pity. In terms of overcoats it was almost a failure, particularly given that the British warm continues to be made by Micheal Jay tailoring, and is not only one of the most sought after coats but also one of the hardest to find, yet it did not rate a mention.Does this mean that Mr Roetzel does not know that it is still made?I think that this question highlights the weakness of the book, it was under done and under researched and ought to have been better with a greater coverage of those types of clothing that was mentioned in the book.I was left thinking that, whilst it was OK, it could have been better much better and my greatest regret was that I bought it newThe books could have provided a better outline of tailors who continue to make bespoke items
