Always looking for books to read to my little one and was really looking forward to reading this. I thought the book was very cute, educational and good for younger children. I will say that the graphics were not my personal favorite as I think they could have been done a littler better but all in all it was a good book!Disclaimer: I was given this book at a discounted cost for my honest review.
This was a really interesting book for our family, and especially for me. We read this book together, with my 10 year old doing the reading (which impresses me every time). I don't remember learning all the animal fact bits that were included in this book in my childhood. The illustrations were interesting, though in this book, the facts were more impacting. The book format really highlights the images and gives ample time for talking about the pictures. One spread has an image with a couple of sentences, then the next is simply an image. This repeats throughout the book and gives a great format for reading together.This book gives enough information to build a foundation, without being too in-depth or overwhelming. For us, it was random, for others, it would work well. I also think this book would work well for a classroom, because there is a lot of opportunity for talking about the pictures, or even completing a written or drawing assignment. Personally, as a homeschooler, I love books like this one that give valuable information in a quick and easy to digest format.Overall: Neat information, as quick or slow as you make it. We enjoyed it, and I think that most young children would be interested in reading this with their grown-up.The Kindle version of this book was provided to me for free, with the expectation that I review it honestly.
My review of another book by this same publisher applies to this title. of the 3 we choose this was my sons least favorite. he still enjoyed it, however wasn't as drawn in as he was with Kids Book of Questions Why do I...here is that review. All the same principals apply to What do Animals eat...Okay so I have decided to go about my review a littler differently than I usually do. I am going to allow my child to give me their feedback and base the majority of my review on that since lets face it this book is intended to be reviewed by the actual reader not by a 30 something mother of 2. lol! So with that said I read this book to my 6 year old son and he seemed to just gobble it up. His usual wont sit still for a story self was literally glued to his seat and listening intently (which if I were reviewing as his mom would be a HUGE plus) he had many MANY follow up questions for each question and their subsequent answers from the book (which if i were reviewing as his mom would kind of annoy me since I then in turn had to spend several minutes answering the questions with content not available in the book) He remained very curious and engaged from start to finish of the book (almost an hour and a half due to me having to have dialogue with him and answer all of his other questions) I asked him at the end of the book what his thoughts of the book were and to quote him he said " I loved it! can we read it again!" so obviously he loved the book and as such I would say it was a hit for the intended reader. Now here is where I will give my mom feedback. I found that the books intended audience is perfect only as long as an adult is available to answer the slew of follow up questions from the book. That is not necessarily a negative. I think this book offers an opportunity for the mother/Child to actively engage in dialogue and ends in relationship building. based on that fact I give a solid 4 stars and would purchase this book as well as the others by this same author, I would just do so with the knowledge that its an active Q & A style book, and gets their brains working so for sure not a bed time story type book. I did receive this book for free in exchange for my honest feedback. My opinions are never swayed based on promotional pricing as an online shopper personally I review heavily on reviews when making my purchases.I hope my reviews are helpful for you in your shopping experience. Well, it covers what it says on the front. The book is 23 pages, and each page is a picture of an animal with the question "What does this animal eat", alongside an answer. In the back is a test with a number of questions, like "What animals eat grass" The depictions are cute, and the premise is straightforward. Unfortunately, there are a number of problems.There are several grammatical errors in the book. I find this troubling, since it is a book for children, and reading it is intended to be a learning activity. Please spellcheck before publishing your childrens' book!Secondly, several of the answers are incorrect. Rabbits don't conventionally eat carrots. They conventionally eat grass and weeds. Have you ever seen an actual, live rabbit? They hob around fields ripping up grass, not gardening and digging up roots buried in the ground. Of course, in our culture kids often learn that rabbits eat carrots from cartoons and children's books (like this one!), but that doesn't make it true, and we shouldn't be teaching children things that are wrong for no particular reason.Rabbits are not the only error in the book. Several of the answers are wrong to varying degrees. The book had one job, and it apparently didn't fact check anything before rushing to print.I'm giving it two stars, instead of one, because it is currently free, and the pictures are cute. If you're looking for a book with cute pictures that will let you talk about animals with your children, this one would be a fine pick. If you're looking for a book your kids will actually learn something from without you guiding the learning yourself, this book won't work for you at all.I received this product for free or at a discount in exchange for a review.
